This week, children at Sherborne House have engaged in a variety of activities during Anti-Bullying Week 2024, held from 13th to 15th November.
One highlight was Odd Sock Day, celebrated on Tuesday, which encouraged us all to embrace our uniqueness and stand together against bullying. By wearing mismatched socks, we visually showed our individuality, while also sharing a powerful message about standing up against bullying. The children had a fantastic time singing along to ‘Andy and the Odd Socks’ 2024 theme song; for those interested, you can find it here Andy and the Odd Socks Choose Respect 2024 for Anti Bullying Week. This musical experience added an element of fun to our important discussions about bullying.
Throughout the week, we made sure our children had a solid understanding of what bullying really is. In their Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships and Health Education (RHE) lessons, we talked about the difference between occasional disagreements and the repeated mean or unkind behaviour that characterises bullying. We also reminded children about the various types of bullying, including physical, verbal, cyber, and social/emotional, and emphasised the importance of knowing how to seek help should they, or a friend, ever find themselves in a bullying situation.
We particularly focused on how everyone can Choose Respect—this year’s national anti-bullying message. Through discussions, our children reflected on their actions and the effects they have on one another. By promoting empathy and understanding, we create a supportive atmosphere that nurtures kindness and respect within our SHS community.
On Friday, during our Golden Thread afternoon, we organised a range of activities centred around respect and our anti-bullying theme. Our Upper School children had the chance to prepare PSHE homework that involved creating activities to share with the younger children in years R, 1 and 2. The younger children enjoyed a carousel of fun activities, moving in small groups to different stations arranged in the Upper School classrooms. The activities included games, posters, quizzes, presentations, drama and word searches, all aimed at reinforcing the messages of respect and kindness. It was heartening to see how maturely our older children took on leadership roles, educating and inspiring their younger peers and the fantastic collaboration between different ages and year groups.
To wrap up the week, we returned to our Forms to watch the national ‘live’ anti-bullying lesson broadcast on Tuesday. This was a further opportunity for discussion, and it provided several moments to pause and reflect.
The Anti-bullying alliance has also produced a helpful parents pack: A TOOL FOR PARENTS AND CARERS .
As we move forward, we remain committed to prioritising the emotional and social well-being of every child. Fostering a culture of respect, kindness, and understanding is key to combating bullying and nurturing a positive environment for everyone. Thank you for your ongoing support in promoting these values and helping Sherborne House School to be a place where every child is happy and thrives.
